Complementary Therapies

Complementary therapies are treatments and activities that cancer patients can have along with their standard medical treatment with the consent of their medical team.

These treatments have been found by some to aid in the reduction of stress levels, improving coping skills and promoting a sense of wellbeing.

All of the complementary therapies offered at Mayo Cancer Support are free of charge and many of our therapists have cancer-specific training.

The aim in providing these treatments is to introduce new ways of relaxation and self-care for cancer patients or their family members and friends as they progress through their cancer journey.

Reflexology
Reflexology involves a type of massage – mostly of the feet - based on a theory that areas of the foot are connected to certain body systems. The application of gentle pressure to these targeted spots is thought to release trapped energy, helping to restore balance to the body after it has experienced disruption due to illness, stress or trauma.

Bio-energy
This therapy works with your energy field to help balance your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. It is thought to facilitate the body’s natural ability to heal and also promotes a wonderful sense of wellbeing, calm and relaxation in the therapy recipient.

Massage
Touch is the most natural form of communication. Nurturing, comforting and healing, massage transcends words and helps to comfort and relax, both physiologically and psychologically. It eases tension in the body and releasing toxins that can build up in the muscles, promoting positive, happy feelings.
