Play Therapy
The thoughts and feelings that a cancer diagnosis – either personal or in a loved one – can elicit in children can be challenging for them to process. Play therapy is an effective way for them to express some of their thoughts and emotions and overcome the difficulties they are experiencing in a relaxed, safe and confidential environment where they are guided and supported by a specialist play therapy counsellor.

Art Therapy
At Mayo Cancer Support we can facilitate art therapy for children and young people impacted by a cancer diagnosis in themselves or a loved one. Art therapy sessions take place in a safe, relaxed and confidential setting where a specialist therapist can help the children or young people to express themselves through painting or drawing and process any challenging emotions that might arise.

CLIMB Programme
Established in the US in 2001, the Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery (CLIMB) programme is a six-week group therapy programme for children aged 5-12 years who are experiencing cancer through a diagnosis in a parent or sibling. Through activities like play and art, CLIMB aims to build upon the child’s strengths and increase their ability to cope with stress associated with their loved one’s illness.
